Description
Detached three-bay two-storey mill owner's house, c.1775, on a symmetrical plan with single-bay two-storey pedimented breakfront, single-bay single-storey flanking end bays, and pair of two-bay two-storey returns to north. Extensively renovated, c.1875. Mostly refenestrated. Now in private residential use. Hipped and pitched slate roofs on a U-shaped plan (gabled to pediment; hipped to end bays) with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered stepped eaves. Unpainted roughcast walls with rendered surround to pediment having round recess to tympanum with moulded surround. Square-headed window openings with cut-stone sills, moulded surrounds, and replacement uPVC casement windows retaining some six-over-six timber sash windows throughout. Round-headed door opening under decorative wrought iron open porch (having pillars with decorative brackets/spandrels supporting open apron) with moulded surround, and timber panelled door having overlight. Interior with timber panelled shutters to window openings. Set back from road in own grounds.
Appraisal
A middle-size house of compact appearance forming an integral component of the architectural heritage of Kilmacow on account of the status as one of the last surviving elements of a once-extensive flour mill complex, later a corn mill representing one of fourteen such centres operating in the locality in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Simple dressings producing a pared-down Classical theme serve to significantly enhance the architectural design value of the composition: however, the external expression of the house has not benefited from the inappropriate replacement fittings inserted to the openings.
