Detached three-bay single-storey Tudor-style gate lodge with dormer attic, c.1825, on a T-shaped plan with single-bay single-storey lower return to south. Pitched slate roofs on a T-shaped plan with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimney stack on rendered base, cut-limestone coping to gables having finials to apexes, and cast-iron rainwater goods on cut-limestone eaves. Broken coursed squared limestone walls. Square-headed window openings in bipartite arrangement to front (north) and to side (west) elevations with cut-granite flush surrounds having chamfered reveals, and four-over-four timber sash windows. Round-headed window openings to remainder with cut-granite flush surrounds having chamfered reveals, and timber casement windows. Tudor-headed door opening with cut-granite surround having chamfered reveals, and replacement tongue-and-groove timber panelled door. Set perpendicular to road at entrance to grounds of Shankill Castle.
Enhancing the group and setting values of the grounds a picturesque small-scale lodge forms an appealing landmark at the entrance to the Shankill Castle estate. Imbued with Tudor overtones the architectural design value of the composition is identified by the pleasant configuration or juxtaposition of openings incorporating a variety of profiles, and so on: meanwhile the finely-dressed surrounds standing out against the sombre palette of the County Kilkenny limestone construction further enhance the visual aesthetic of the lodge. Having been well maintained the lodge presents an early aspect with the fundamental attributes surviving in place, thereby assimilating pleasantly into an historic environment.
