Description

Section of broken coursed squared rubble sandstone boundary wall, built 1853-4, incorporating segmental-headed carriageway with tooled cut-limestone block-and-start surround having tooled cut-limestone voussoirs (now blocked-up with red brick Common (fifth course headers) bond infill), and sections of stone cobbling to threshold. Road fronted to perimeter of site of Castlecomer District Hospital (Castlecomer Union Workhouse).

Appraisal

The remains of an extensive boundary wall exhibiting a traditional construction in sandstone while tooled dressings enhancing the architectural design value of the composition display high quality stone masonry. The wall remains of particular significance for the associations with the Castlecomer Union Workhouse complex having historically demarcated the curtilage of the compound.
