Gateway, built 1803, comprising segmental-headed carriageway with cut-limestone piers, cut-limestone stringcourse to spring of arch, cut-limestone voussoirs having keystone, double gates, frieze supporting carved cut-limestone cornice having blocking course with raised central block, unpainted rendered flanking boundary wall incorporating square-headed blind gateways (probably originally open as pedestrian gateways) with cut-limestone block-and-start surrounds having double keystones, and chamfered coping. Road fronted at entrance to grounds of James Stephens (Kilkenny City) Military Barracks.
Occupying a prominent position at the entrance to the James Stephens (Kilkenny City) Military Barracks complex an elegantly-composed gateway displaying high quality stone masonry makes an imposing visual statement in the street scene.
