Section of random rubble limestone boundary wall, c.1775, with lime mortar, iron ties, square-headed pedestrian gateway (having painted limestone ashlar block-and-start surround incorporating keystone, and timber panelled door), gateway (having segmental-headed carriageway with unpainted rendered piers, rendered keystone, timber boarded double doors having wicket gate, and cut-stone band supporting moulded cornice having blocking course to parapet rising to centre), outline of elliptical-headed carriageway (having remains of tooled dressed limestone surround, and random rubble limestone infill), and cut-stone coping. Road fronted.
A substantial boundary wall exhibiting a traditional construction in locally-sourced rubble stone forming an appealing feature in the streetscape: fine cut-limestone accents displaying high quality stone masonry further enliven the architectural design value of the site while an attractive Classically-detailed gateway originally allowing access into gardens having associations with the Kilkenny Castle estate makes a positive impression on the visual appeal of Castle Road.
