Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1870, with "VR" royal cipher and raised crown motif. Set within stone roughcast wall of former forge.
This cast-iron post box, which is still in use, is an important feature in the rural landscape and is prominently sited on the wall of the former forge at the Boley Crossroads. The raised royal cipher (and manufacturer's signature) is of considerable artistic merit. Its age and survival, however, together with its associations with Ireland as formerly part of the British Empire are of great historical and social importance. The post box is also a fine example of early cast-iron work.
