Description

Gateway, c.1870, comprising pair of open work cast-iron piers with cast-iron double gates, railings having spear head finials, and rendered outer piers.

Appraisal

These gates, which originally provided a formal entrance to a country house, have been converted to use as an entrance to a modern housing development. Their survival is of some social and historical importance as testament to the earlier estate on the site. The gates are a considerable feat of artistry and include decorative foliate and spear head motifs - sited just off the road side the gates are a prominent landmark in the locality and are attractively off set by the mature trees to the rear that also survive from the earlier estate. The gates are also of interest, representing an early surviving example of cast-iron work.
