Six-arch rubble stone road bridge over river, c.1840, with triangular cut-waters, cut-stone voussoirs and apertures to parapet wall to east. Rubble stone walls. Rubble stone triangular cut-waters (some with concrete block over supporting pipeline). Rubble stone parapet walls (with traces of render, ruled and lined, over). Rubble stone coping. Six round arches. Dressed cut-stone voussoirs. Cut-stone soffits with traces of render over. Sited spanning River Liffey with grass banks to river.
Carragh Bridge is a fine stone bridge that forms a picturesque feature on the River Liffey and is one of a group of bridges on the section of that river that passes through County Kildare. The construction of the arches that have retained their original shape is of technical and engineering merit. The bridge exhibits good quality stone masonry and fine, crisp joints. The bridge is of considerable historical and social significance as a reminder of the road improvement development in Ireland, which brought about many technical advances in the mid nineteenth century.
