Detached five-bay single-storey house, c.1880, on a symmetrical plan retaining early aspect with round-headed door opening to centre. Hipped gabled roof with slate. Mineral felt over. Clay ridge tiles. Rendered chimney stacks. Cast-iron rainwater goods on eaves course. Roughcast walls. Unpainted. Square-headed window openings. Stone sills. Early timber casement windows with central mullion. Round-headed door opening. Timber panelled door. Decorative fanlight. Set back from road in own grounds. Lawns and path to forecourt. Gateway, c.1880, to east comprising pair of stone piers with ball finials having iron gates.
This house is a fine example of a late nineteenth-century modest-scale residence that retains much of its original character and features. The treatment of the elevation is in keeping with the small scale of the building and comprises a front composed of graceful, balanced proportions on a symmetrical plan without extraneous detailing. Decorative incident is provided, however, in the round-headed door opening with a delicate fanlight and also in the treatment of the window openings that are graceful in their proportions. The hipped gabled roof is a slightly unusual feature on a building of this size and, the mineral felt notwithstanding, many early materials survive in situ, including the fenestration and door fittings. The gateway to the east is also of some artistic merit, complementing the ornate quality of the fanlight. Both gateway and house provide an attractive and prominent feature on the crossroads.
