Description

Gateway, c.1900, comprising four decorative cast-iron open work piers with castellated coping having cast-iron double gates, cast-iron flanking pedestrian gates, curved flanking walls with cast-iron railings over and cut-stone outer piers with chamfered corners and pyramidal capping.

Appraisal

This gateway is an attractive, highly ornate composition that provides a fitting entrance to the Newabbey House estate. The gateway forms part of a self-contained group with the gate lodge to north-west (11819035/KD-28-19-35). The piers, gates and railings are fine examples of early surviving cast-iron work and include unusual detailing, such as the castellated coping to the piers, which is of artistic interest. The outer piers of cut-stone are a good example of the quality of stone masonry practised in the locality. The gateway is a prominent feature on the side of the road and terminates the vista of the road leading out of Kilcullen from the south-east.
