Description

Section of rubble stone boundary wall, dated 1770, with cut-stone date stone/plaque.

Appraisal

This boundary wall is of considerable social and historical significance, providing evidence of a former church on site that was demolished in 1833. The construction of the wall in rubble stone is representative of the traditional economic method of building in the late eighteenth century and forms an attractive feature on the streetscape of Chapel Hill. The cut-stone date stone/plaque, inscribed in a traditional Irish lettering, is of some artistic merit and attests to the quality of craftsmanship traditionally practised in the locality.
