Description

Gateway, c.1885, comprising pair of cast-iron open work piers with cast-iron gates and curved railings having ‘Fleur-de-Lys’ finials.

Appraisal

This gateway is an attractive feature on the streetscape of Drogheda Street and conveys the opulence of Kilrue (House) to the passer-by – the gateway is one of a pair of gateways in close proximity, the other example providing an entrance to Togher House to north-west (11816074/KD-26-16-74). The gates and railings are fine examples of early surviving decorative cast-iron work.
