Description

Freestanding cast-iron gas lamp standard, c.1900, comprising moulded plinth with embossed crest and fluted shaft having lamp fitting over. Subsequently converted to electric. One of a number of gas lamp standards along bank of Grand Canal.

Appraisal

This gas lamp standard, one of a number of such models that are located on the south-west bank of the Grand Canal in Robertstown, is of considerable technical merit, both for its original purpose in providing light in public spaces, but also for its manufacture in cast-iron - the group is also a rare survival, having been converted to use for electric light, rather than being replaced as elsewhere. The lamp standard is also of considerable artistic merit, having been conceived as an aesthetic as well as a functional piece.
