Description

Gateway, c.1785, comprising pair of limestone ashlar Gothic-style piers with lancet-arch panels on clustered colonettes, moulded cornices and capping, and cast-iron double gates having spear-head finials.

Appraisal

This gateway is an attractive and integral component of Leixlip Demesne and was designed to convey to the passer-by the opulence of the main house in the grounds. Well-maintained, the piers retain a crisp intricacy that attests to the high quality of stone masonry traditionally practised in the locality. Also of interest are the gates that are a good example of early iron work. The gateway forms an attractive feature on the streetscape, terminating the vista of Pound Street from the north-west.
