Description

Collection of various grotesque, Gothic garden features, c.1800, associated with Emmet's Walk. Grotto and dolmen with druidic and prehistoric pretensions, three stone archways, a small building with gothic openings and battlemented roof and a two-storey tower adjacent to a two-flight stairway and weir in river, possibly originally housing a hydraulic ram. This tower has a vaulted lower chamber with gothic openings, a similar first floor and a rooftop belvedere. Construction includes the use of slag, terracotta, stone and brick with distinctive fossilised crenellations.

Appraisal

A fine collection of garden ornaments in the well wooded grounds of St Enda's Park, all build in a primitive, rugged style appropriate to their isolated setting.
