Freestanding cut-granite "Murrain Cross", dated 1867. Set in wooded park.
A so-called "Murrain Cross" making a pleasing, if largely inconspicuous visual statement in an urbanised setting. NOTE: The "Murrain Cross" is a relic of agricultural activity in the south Dublin region which, in the nineteenth century, saw livestock affected by outbreaks of disease including Blackleg, Bovine Pleuropneumonia and Foot-and-Mouth. A widespread outbreak of disease prompted Cardinal Paul Cullen (1803-78) to issue an order that all grazing fields be blessed (1867). The "Murrain Cross" off Firhouse Road is one of only two surviving in the south Dublin landscape and it has a sibling off Ballycullen Road (see 11220007).
