Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron "wall box" post box, between 1882-1901; extant 1902, with "VR [Victoria Regina]" royal cipher. Repositioned, ----. Set in roughcast boundary wall.

Appraisal

A "Second National Standard Small Wall Box" post box supplied by H. and C. Smith of the King Street Iron Works, Cork, representing an interesting example of mass-produced cast-iron work making a pleasing, if largely inconspicuous visual statement in an urban street scene with embellishments identifying the artistic potential of the composition including the Queen Victoria (1819-1901; r. 1837-1901) royal cipher of additional significance as an imprinted reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
