Freestanding monument, designed 1906; dated 1907; cast 1908; unveiled 1908, on a square plan on cut-limestone plinth. Street fronted on concrete brick cobbled square.
A monument signed (1907) by Oliver Sheppard RHA (1865-1941) representing an important component of the early twentieth-century built heritage of Enniscorthy (cf. 15503028). NOTE: A foundation stone was laid by Sir Thomas Grattan Esmonde MP (1862-1935) who had attended the laying of the foundation stone of the 1798 Monument in Wexford. The choice of Market Square was a compromise once permission to erect a monument on Vinegar Hill was refused by the Portsmouth Estate.
