Description

Riverside quays, built between 1841-1849, incorporating limestone quay walls, limestone steps and cast-iron bollards (dated 1844). Modern concrete plinth wall and railings set behind quay wall. Located on east bank of the River Shannon to south of Shannon Road Bridge.

Appraisal

An attractive and well-built limestone quay that is now a local amenity. It was originally constructed as part of the Shannon Navigation Works carried out by the 1840s to open up the River Shannon to increased river trade and make Athlone a major inland port.
