Description

Remains of extensive series of ramparts and batteries built by the British Army, c.1800. Now largely built over by a local authority housing estate, built c.1965. Ramparts constructed of earth and stone. No trace of any buildings remain. Located to the west of the town on elevated site.

Appraisal

This overgrown site originally formed part of an extensive complex of batteries built by the British Army to defend against possible French invasion during the Napoleonic Wars, illustrating the strategic importance of Athlone in national defence.
