Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1890, with inscribed “VR” royal cipher. Set into rubble stone boundary wall with red brick surround having shallow segmental head.

Appraisal

An attractive item of street furniture this post box representing a good example of early mass-produced cast-iron. The raised lettering and royal cipher enhance the design quality of the composition, and refer to a period when Ireland was past of the British Empire. The red brick surround emphasises the visual impact of the post box in the wall.
