Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1890, with raised “VR” royal cipher. Set in random rubble stone boundary wall with red brick surround having shallow segmental capping.
An attractive item of street furniture, the raised detailing enhancing the artistic design quality of the composition. The royal cipher is of particular importance, attesting to a period when Ireland was part of the British Empire. The post box also represents an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron work. A subtle feature in Church Road, the post box is provided with additional prominence through the use of a red brick surround.
