Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1915, with inscribed “GR” royal cipher. Set into painted roughcast boundary wall.
This cast-iron post box, which is still in use, is an important, if subtle, item of street furniture that represents an early-surviving example of mass-produced cast-iron work. The raised details serve to enhance the artistic design quality of the composition, while the presence of a royal cipher augments the importance of the post box as a tangible reminder of Ireland as part of the British Empire.
