Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1935, with raised 'P&T' insignia in Gaelic script. Set into painted rendered, ruled and lined wall.

Appraisal

This cast-iron post box, which is still in use, is an attractive item of street furniture and represents an early surviving artifact of mass-produced cast ironwork. The raised detailing is of artistic interest, the Gaelic script representing the continued promotion of a national identity within the emergent independent state.
