Description

Entrance gateway and railings, built c. 1850. Wrought-iron with cast-iron embellishments, railings on limestone ashlar plinth wall. Gates surmounted by arch having wrought-iron spiral decoration. Gateway attached to property to east and to churchyard boundary wall to west. Leads to small grassed area with gravel pathway.

Appraisal

This gateway represents a fine example of nineteenth century iron-working skills and is therefore of technical and artistic interest. Its arched form and spiral detail contrast well with the plain railings on the nearby church and on the constitutional buildings opposite. Coupled with the green area it bounds, the gateway adds variety to the urban streetscape.
