Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box with hinged door, installed c.1901-10, with banded margin surround, projecting letter slot embossed with raised 'POST OFFICE' insignia, ER VII royal cipher to upper portion, 'W.T.Allen & Co. London' foundry cast to bottom. Set into roughcast rendered section of eastern gateway to Gallanagh House, north-west of Monaghan Town.

Appraisal

This post box is an attractive item of street furniture that is representative of mass-produced cast-iron ware. The cast royal cipher and banded margins enhance this utilitarian object, the Edward VII monogram also being a reminder of a time when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
