Description

Entrance gates, built c. 1850, originally accessing Sienna Convent, now leading to cul-de-sac. Channelled ashlar limestone square-profiled gate piers, bearing name "Sienna Convent" to frieze, surmounted by cornice and pyramidal capping stones. Decorative wrought-iron work to gates with cross finial, pedestrian access gate to west. Gates front onto street, gravel laneway to north.

Appraisal

Originally erected as an entrance to the Sienna Convent, these gates represent the boundary between the religious institution and the outside world. The wrought-iron and dressed limestone utilised in their construction were clearly executed by skilled craftsmen. The entrance is a fine addition to the streetscape.
