Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, erected c. 1890, with V.R. insignia and crown, set in rendered wall. Manufacturer's name appears on base in raised lettering: 'W.T. Allen & Co. London'.

Appraisal

This attractive item of street furniture, which is still in use and remains in good condition, is a fine example of early mass-produced cast-iron. The raised lettering and royal insignia enhance the design quality of the composition and is a reminder of Ireland's political past. It identified the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901) and remains a subtle and historic feature in the streetscape.
