Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, between 1881-1901, with raised "VR" royal cipher. Set in painted roughcast wall with rendered surround.
Making a pleasing, if subtle visual impression in the street scene a post box represents an important, if small-scale artefact of early mass-produced cast-iron work. Raised dressings identifying the aesthetic concerns of the composition include a cipher of significance as a tangible reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
