Description

Freestanding cast-iron gas lamp pillar, c.1900, comprising cylindrical shaft on profiled octagonal plinth with moulded necking supporting iron lamp holder. Now disused. Set back from line of road on concrete verge.

Appraisal

An attractive component of the street furniture of Stoneyford representing an early-surviving feature of mass-produced cast-iron ware. Profiled detailing throughout identifies the artistic design significance of the composition while the survival of the artefact is of importance as a reminder of the mechanisms put in place to light streets in the period before rural electrification.
