Description

Freestanding cast-iron pillar post box, between 1881-1901, with raised "VR" royal cipher, moulded necking, and shallow domed capping. Road fronted on concrete brick cobbled footpath.

Appraisal

An attractive item of street furniture representing an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron ware. Raised details contributing significantly to the artistic design quality of the piece include the royal cipher is of particular importance as a tangible reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
