Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1890, with raised "VR" royal cipher and crown motif. Mounted in wall of Newbridge Railway Station.

Appraisal

This cast-iron post box, which is still in use, is an important, if subtle, feature in the Newbridge Railway Station complex. The raised royal cipher (and manufacturer's signature, which is now heavily coated in paint and somewhat indiscernible) is of considerable artistic merit. Its age and survival, however, together with its associations with Ireland as formerly part of the British Empire are of great historical and social importance.
