Description

Section of curved rubble stone boundary wall, built 1821, on a corner site originally on a circular plan and built as pound with rubble stone coping and pair of squared rubble stone piers.

Appraisal

This section of rubble stone boundary wall is a fine example of the once prolific, but increasingly rare, traditional method of constructing boundary walls. Replacement or modern boundary walls are frequently built with less attention paid to stone masonry traditions. The wall is of social and historical significance as a reminder of the former pound operating in the town. The wall forms an attractive feature on the corner of Pound Lane and Mill Street.
