Description

Detached four-bay single-storey vernacular house, built c.1800. Hipped thatched roof having decoratively scolloped ridge and painted smooth rendered chimneystack. Painted smooth rendered walls throughout. Diminutive square-headed window openings having painted reveals, painted stone sills and replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed door opening having timber battened door. Dry-stone walls to site boundary at west.

Appraisal

The low elevation, thick walls, and small openings are typical of the vernacular tradition in Ireland. Once common throughout the countryside and small villages, thatched buildings have become increasingly rare. This example retains its original modest form and low chimneystack.
