Freestanding ice house, built c. 1800, now disused and overgrown. Earthen cover with coursed rubble granite retaining walls. Pointed-arch opening with granite rubble surround. Red brick lining to interior.
Ice houses were built to facilitate the preservation of food, and the brick lining was designed to enhance the cooling qualities of this semi-underground store. This structure stands as an interesting reminder of the ingenuity and labour that were required for food preservation in the past, as well being indicative of the scope and range of structures that made up the historic demesne of Drumcondra House.
