Description
Attached two-bay two-storey house, built c.1860, with return to north. Pitched artificial slate roof to front (south) and flat roof to rear hidden behind brick parapet wall with granite coping, having rendered chimneystacks. Yellow brick walls laid in Flemish bond. Square-headed window openings with rendered reveals, granite sills and six-over-six pane timber sash windows. Elliptical-headed door opening with rendered surround, timber panelled pilasters having carved console brackets supporting timber cornice and teardrop fanlight, surrounding timber panelled door with granite threshold. Front garden having path with limestone setts. Cast-iron railings on rendered plinth and cast-iron pedestrian gate to front (south).
Appraisal
Construction of the Grand Canal was completed in 1797, providing a waterway connection between Dublin and the River Shannon. New streets, including Windsor Terrace, were laid out along the canal and in the surrounding area, and residential development began in the early nineteenth century. The houses along Windsor Terrace were built speculatively giving rise to small groupings of similar, though not identical, terraced houses. Individually named terraces, including Rosanna Place and Bloomfield Place are recorded on the Ordnance Survey maps. This house is remarkably intact, retaining much of its historic fabric including its doorcase and teardrop fanlight, timber sash windows, cast-iron railings and pedestrian gate, making an important contribution to the historic streetscape.
