Wall-mounted cast-iron postbox, c. 1905, with royal monogram of Edward VII, and 'Post Office' in raised lettering. Set in pier to front of telephone exchange. Foundry mark to base illegible.
Located in a residential suburban area, this attractive piece of street furniture remains in active use. The raised insignia of Edward VII demonstrates the artistic capabilities of mass-produced iron work at the time of its casting, and enlivens an otherwise functional object. An historical survival from the era of British colonial control of Ireland, it is also an important reminder of the role of the postal service in communications throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
