Description

Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1900, with banded shaft, having finial and fluting to cap and neck, fluting to spout with bucket grip and curved pumping arm terminating in ball. Set on concrete plinth and surrounded by low roughcast rendered wall.

Appraisal

An attractive water pump with artistic detailing that lends visual appeal to a simple functional object. It has an accessible location, sited near a crossroads, due to its former importance as a communal water source. It is an interesting and notable feature on the streetscape and a reminder of a time before domestic running water.
