Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, erected c.1915. Profiled border with hooded letter opening and crown insignia over, rounded trim to door opening, raised 'G.R.' lettering on door, and rounded hand grip to bottom left. Makers name at bottom in raised lettering 'F. Allen & Co. London'.
A functional piece of street furniture that is a good example of the high quality of mass-produced cast-iron in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was made at the W.T. Allen & Co. foundry in London, which produced post boxes from 1881-1955. Cast-iron post boxes are becoming increasing rare throughout Ireland, often being replaced with mass-produced plastic boxes.
