Appraisal

Designed by George Halpin, inspector for the Commissioners for Irish Lights in the nineteenth century, this lighthouse was built as a guide into Bantry Bay and to light to the eastern entrance to Castletownbere. It is a typical Halpin design and is representative of the high standard which can be seen in his lighthouses throughout Ireland. It was excellently constructed more than one hundred and fifty years ago by Mr Howard of Limerick.
