Appraisal

A fine water pump displaying artistic detail in its functional design including an elegantly curved handle, fluted cap and banded spout. It is a good example of the high standard of design was achieved with cast-iron during the nineteenth century. Pumps such as this one once played an important functional and social role in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, providing a communal water source in the absence of mains supply.
