Appraisal

Water pump displays artistic detail in functional design, with elegantly curved handle, fluted cap and banded spout. Illustrates the high standards of industrial design in cast iron prevalent in nineteenth century. Pumps played both an important functional and social role in nineteenth and twentieth centuries, providing a communal water source in the absence of mains supply.
