Description

Freestanding gates, built c. 1850. Comprising rubble stone walls with dressed limestone plinth, pilasters and copings. Rectangular carved limestone panels to sections. Round-headed carriage entrance with recent timber gates and dressed stone surround comprising impost course and voussoirs, flanking piers, architrave, frieze and cornice.

Appraisal

Triumphal arch style entrance provides unusual architectural incident on roadscape. Finely carved plinth, piers and surround contrast with rubble stone walls and are the work of skilled craftsmen. Classical influence is apparent and unusual within immediate surrounds.
