Description

Freestanding gate piers, erected c.1810, comprising square-profile dressed limestone piers to vehicular entrances and flanking pedestrian entrances. Camber-headed arches to pedestrian entrances having dressed limestone voussoirs, carved string courses to capitals of piers. Set in rubble stone boundary walls.

Appraisal

A monumental entrance gate originally built as part of the military complex at Ballincollig. The barracls was constructed to provide protection for the gunpowder mills located to the north. This entrance exhibits fine stone craftsmanship.
