Description

Free-standing bronze statue of a male figure, erected 1864, and set on stepped plinth with carved frieze to cornice and bronze lettering.

Appraisal

This bronze figure of Father Theobold Mathew, the Capuchin friar and Apostle of Temperance, by sculptor John Henry Foley, makes a notable and positive addition to the streetscape. This statue is of apparent artistic design and was well cast by at the Union St. South Works. Set on a high plinth, which is enhanced by carved detail, it occupies a prominent location in the city, at the northern end of Saint Patrick's Street, close to the busy thoroughfares of Saint Patrick's Bridge, Lavitt's Quay and Merchant's Quay.
