Description

Pair of ashlar limestone gate piers, c. 1870, with limestone copings and wheel guard. Replacement railings and gates.

Appraisal

These gate piers formerly related to the Greenmount Schools which were established during the latter part of the nineteenth century in this area of the city. Though the buildings which this entrance once lead to are now demolished, these piers and the former school building located to the south are interesting reminder of the role the religious institution played in the development of this part of the city. The well-executed ashlar limestone contrasts with the modern materials utilised for similar purposes in the streetscape.
