Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post-box, c. 1905. Embossed inscription 'E R VII' with crown motif embossed on case, door added c.1925 with embossed inscription 'S E' insignia and harp motif. Set in limestone rubble wall with red brick surround.

Appraisal

An interesting historic artefact, this post-box clearly documents the transition from British to Irish administration, retaining an Edwardian surround with replacement door bearing the insignia of the Irish Free State. The embossed details are of artistic as well as technical interest, and particularly important given the short life-span (1922-1951) of the Free State administration.
