The Deco is in the Detail

03 November 2025

The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, the National Built Heritage Service and Cork City Council are partnering on The Deco is in the Detail, a mini-festival celebrating the Art Deco architectural heritage of Cork.

The Deco is in the Detail includes a Talk and Walk taking place in the City Library, Grand Parade, Cork, at 2pm Saturday 8th November.  Talk will include an overview of the Art Deco architectural heritage of Ireland by John Beattie, Architectural Conservation Advisor, National Inventory of Architectural Heritage, and an overview of the Art Deco architectural heritage of Cork by Tom Spalding, author of A Guide to Cork City’s 20th-Century Buildings: An Architectural and Social History (2024) and Designed for Life: Architecture and design in Cork city 1900-90 (2025).  Talk will be immediately followed by Walk, a tour of some Art Deco highlights in the city centre, guided by Tom Spalding.  Admission is free.  An umbrella is advised.

The Deco is in the Detail also includes an exhibition, Christ the King, Turner’s Cross, Cork’s Art Deco Masterpiece, featuring stunning photography by Cathal Noonan which, honing in and hovering above, emphasising textures and tones, encourages locals and non-locals alike to appreciate the sophisticated design and detail of the early twentieth-century suburban church designed by the Chicagoan, Francis Barry Byrne (1883-1967), with Stations and stained glass by his wife, Annette Cremin (1898-1990), and statuary by the Chicagoan John Storrs (1885-1956).  The exhibition is on display in the foyer of the City Library, Grand Parade, Cork, until Saturday 15th November.  Admission is free and sets of limited edition postcards are also free while stocks last.
