The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage has partnered with Galway City Council to create Wonder Wander walking trails. The Wonder Wander walking trails have been developed in collaboration with the local communities. In addition to well-known public buildings, each trail shines a light on some of the lesser known architectural details and the stories that are associated with these unique places.
The Wonder Wander for Eyre Square begins at the Browne Doorway, a seventeenth-century doorcase salvaged from the Browne Mansion in Abbeygate Street, re-erected as the grand entrance to the city’s principal public park in 1905. Taking in all four sides of Eyre Square, highlights of the trail include a nineteenth-century gentlemen’s club, a pub with links to Ed Sheeran, a railway hotel which boasted Walt Disney and Paul McCarney as guests, and a bank whose decorative details will leave you wriggling like a worm! The trail ends with a word of advice to explore the many sculptures and statues that fill Eyre Square including the fountain by Eamonn O’Doherty (1939-2011) designed to resemble the red sails of a traditional Galway Hooker.
