Killala: "The Gazebo" at Castlelackan

The numerous hills north of Killala afford magnificent views over the surrounding landscape.  One of the best vantage points is the hill behind the ruins of the eighteenth-century Castlelackan where an obelisk-topped eye-catcher stands guard overlooking Killala Bay.  Colloquially known as "The Gazebo", the eye-catcher was erected in 1794 for Sir Roger Palmer (d. 1819), second Baronet. The mountainous landscape of County Donegal can be seen on a clear day while Ben Bulben and Knocknarea in County Sligo are also visible from "The Gazebo".
